What should a baby wear for a christening? A guide

A christening is one of the first big days in a baby's life. The family gathers, photos are taken and the little one is the centre of attention.

But what should a baby actually wear? Here is our guide to christening clothes – from colours and fabrics to comfort, small details and gifts.

What's expected at a christening?

There are no fixed rules. Many choose the classic christening gown, while others prefer a simple outfit the baby can wear again afterwards.

The most important thing is that the baby is comfortable and that the outfit suits you and the day. See our selection for the day under Christening.

Colours and fabrics

Light, calm colours are a classic choice for a christening. Cream, beige and warm browns look beautiful in photos and suit both church and celebration.

For the top, a shirt with a collar is a lovely choice. Our tops are hand-picked by us, such as the cream shirt with baby collar and the cream shirt with ruffle collar.

For the bottom half, choose between trousers and skirts. The Flat White trousers and Cortado trousers are sewn in Denmark from 100% cotton. For a skirt, the Cortado skirt and Cortado striped skirt are lovely options.

Comfort first

A christening can be a long day with lots of cuddles, a church service and a party. The clothes need to be easy to wear.

Choose soft materials and a waist that doesn't pinch. Our trousers and skirts have an elasticated waist, so they sit well without being tight.

If the church is chilly, a cream cable-knit cardigan is easy to take on and off. And pack a spare outfit in the bag.

Details: bib and dummy clip

It's the little things that finish a christening outfit – and keep it looking neat all day.

A bib saves the shirt from dribble and milk. Our Cortado bib is reversible, with checked cotton on one side and soft velour on the other. Find more under Bibs.

A dummy clip keeps the dummy from disappearing during the hymns. The Cortado dummy clip is made from cotton with a metal clip, and its length follows the EU safety standard (EN 12586, max. 30 cm). See them all under Dummy clips.

Christening gifts

If you're a guest, a gift the child can use is always a good choice. Think of things that follow the child through everyday life after the big day.

A bib, a dummy clip or a soft cotton Mocca scarf are lovely ideas. For the nursery, a Cortado duvet cover is a gift that gets used every night. And if in doubt, a gift card is always welcome.
